Tramsforming Potters Lane: The Wednesbury Depot Expansion Project By Milan Parchment, Graduate Assistant Project Manager
As we step into a promising 2024, it’s time to reflect on the significant milestones achieved throughout the past year at our Wednesbury Depot expansion project which is taking place at the site of the existing West Midlands Metro depot near Potters Lane in Sandwell.
2023 saw the transition from design to construction and marked the initiation of a transformative journey that showcased not only our team’s expertise but also our commitment to overcoming challenges and delivering results.
Unlocking Potential
The year commenced with advanced works unlocking the project’s potential, enabling the main construction phase to begin pretty much seamlessly. Notable efforts during this stage of activity included addressing mine treatment through remedial works which ensured safety in previously inaccessible areas.
Multiple disciplines saw progress, with earthworks opening new sections of the site and drainage and ducting works facilitating the emergence of various project elements. The installation of a temporary tram wash system streamlined maintenance for the operator’s existing tram fleet, paving the way for an upgraded facility in the project’s later stages.

Geotechnical elements like retaining walls, sustainable drainage elements such attenuation tanks, and structural elements like concrete slabs also took shape, while the southeast area of the site saw the completion of significant groundworks, along with the completion of the initial stages of construction for a new car park for West Midland’s Metro’s workforce. This space will be used both to accommodate the delivery team during construction but also support the operator’s growing workforce.
Looking Ahead: A glimpse into 2024
Reflecting on 2023, we take pride in our exceptional health and safety performance. In the coming year, our unwavering commitment to safety will remain a top priority, fostering a positive safety culture.
Anticipating a busy 2024, the project will focus on completing sub-structure works for the northeast building extension, increasing the size of the tram repair workshop and introducing new office spaces.
Simultaneously, the southwest area will witness the finalisation of earth retaining walls, drainage, and preparations for new track and overhead line installations.
